課程概述

This course is designed to prepare freshman students to enhance and improve writing and speaking skills. Activities such as discussion and debate, essay composition, building vocabulary, analytical thinking, evaluation of media, public speaking, and fundamental research will be covered. Emphasis will be placed on written and oral communication skills. Students should also expect enrichment projects to correspond with each unit of study.

 The students are expected to express ideas clearly and effectively in a variety of oral contexts and apply active listening skills in the analysis and evaluation of spoken ideas.

 Class participation 
10% 
 (1) Attendance will be taken once in a while throughout this semester. If you are absent for one hour, **one point** will be deducted from class participation. If you are absent in case of uncontrollable situations (e.g. illness, emergency, important occasions, etc.), please give me the valid proof within two weeks. (2) Students absent **3 times/more** without cause, per semester, will receive **0 credits.** (3) Absence from a class is no excuse for not knowing the assignment and what has been discussed in class. It is your responsibility to ask your classmates what has been covered in the class. (4) Lateness: students who come in class more than **20 minutes** late will be marked absent. (5) Phone: Please turn off your mobile phone during the three-hour class period. **2 points** will be deducted every time your mobile phone rings.

 Group activities

 (1) Time: 3 to 5 minutes per group. (2) Lateness on the day of presentation or postponement is not allowed.

 Writing assignments

 A. In class writing assignments B. Journal entries: (a) Delay: Please submit your journal entries on time. **10 points** will be deducted from every delayed journal. Delayed journal submission for more than two weeks will NOT be accepted on any account. (b) Print: Unless otherwise mentioned, your journal must be printed in the A4 sheet with double space, Arial/Times New Roman/Vernada font, 12pts font size, preferably double-sided. C. Email writing D. Final exam

 Christmas activity 
10% 
 (1) Time: 8 to 10 minutes per group. (2) Please equally distribute the number of lines per person. (3) Lateness on the day of presentation or postponement is not allowed.
